BlogHer Food 2010 – Feel the LOVE

BlogHer Food conference in San Francisco

Green

Last year in June I launched a little blog called MarlaMeridith.com. I went to a conference in San Francisco in October because my friend Momfluential told me it would be a good thing to do. It was my first time away from my hubs and the kids. I was so green in the blogosphere. I had never heard of the White On Rice Couple, Tartelette, Steamy Kitchen, Matt Bites – none of them. Heck, I had not a clue who The Pioneer Woman was. I tell you I was so green & such a newbie I am not sure there is a name for it. Please share if you can think of one. I spent lots of time alone & I was OK with that. There was so much to take in.

My ears listened closely to each & every word at every panel I attended. I even announced in the middle of a HUGE photo panel that I had no time for taking food photos other than the ones I snapped with my iPhone………

This trip was way different than the last. Not only did I have lots of friends that I see regularly. I also have lots of amazing friends that I had met online & I could not wait to meet in person – Maria from Two Peas and Their Pod, Kristen from Dine and Dish, Alice from Savory Sweet Life, Katie from Good Life Eats, Dara from Cookin’ Canuck, Amanda from Kevin and Amanda, Heather from Multiply Delicious, Susan from FoodBlogga, and so many more. The words “love fest” have been flying around to describe this event and I would agree, that is what it was.

Hear Us Out

So not only was BlogHer ’10 a time to socialize like a wild woman, it was also a time to learn and share. As many of you know I spoke on a panel with my great buddies Carrie from Deliciously Organic and Amanda from I am Baker. Natanya from Fete and Feast was our wonderful moderator. I am so excited to announce that Carrie’s new book Deliciously Organic is available to order! The photos are by Helen Dujardin (Tartelette) & are gorgeous.

We were the breakout Vocation session called “New to Food Blogging? How Do You Stand Out In a Crowded Blogosphere?” This was the most amazing opportunity and I thank BlogHer for choosing me to speak on a panel. It was so fun to share information, listen to questions and meet new bloggers.

I attended many panels too. Which panel grabbed me the most? By far the touching and beautiful one gal presentation called Visuals: Think Outside the Plate. This was presented by the award winning (and big hearted) documentary photographer Penny De Los Santos. She is a true gem & worth every great thing folks say about her. She encouraged us to connect with things larger than the plate – like life.

Pretty tourist pictures from vacation in San Francisco.

Parties

Let’s just say this – when I wasn’t at a party I was at another party. I have never been in so many places at one time. On Thursday night we started with the Side of Safety “Iron Chef Cook-Off party sponsored by the Underwriters Laboratories and a Beringer party with the Deen Bros.

On Friday night was the stylish and delicious La Petite Soir̩e co-hosted by Helen РTartelette Kristen РDine and Dish, Jane This Week for Dinner & Stefania Clever Girls Collective

On Saturday evening we went to the grand finale wrap-up party held at Le Cordon Bleu hosted by Elise – Simply Recipes, Jaden Steamy Kitchen and Ree The Pioneer Woman. If you are wondering where all those goofy black and white photos are coming from, there was an amazing photo booth there that captured our mugs. Visit the HP Digital PhotoBooth Galleries webpage to see the slew of pictures from that event.

Love Our Community

We have each others backs, that is all there is to it. Through blogging I have launched into an amazing new career & have met fabulous friends. Fellow bloggers are our colleagues & true friends. We look forward to sharing all kinds of online and real time experiences with one another. From creative wisdom, SEO building tactics, recipes, laughter and sincerity. If someone is down we help them back up. If someone is happy, we cheer them on with pride. No matter what the goal is with blogging, there are many common threads.

It is also fun to connect with the companies and brands that fuel our ingredient lists. There are many great PR people I visited with on this trip & it was wonderful to see those I have known for some time. Yes, there are PR folks who respect us & understand us as people who work dang hard at what we do as bloggers.

BlogHer Food bloggers tour cityHomecoming

Why do I do what I do? I blog because I love it. It fuels me, drives me and pushes me to be my best each day. As our blogs grow we become the voices that carry messages to others. I love our exchanges online. You guys teach me so much & I hope I give you vittles of info too.

At the end of the day I am a wife, mom and daughter. Being away is super fun & it gives me the motivation to push ahead. Coming home to my family is blissful and puts everything I do into sharp focus.

The kids and I had a special treat to look forward to when I got home –  the Bakerella book signing. I urge you guys to check out her book Cake Pops, it is GORGEOUS!

  19. What an encouraging post. As a newbie this year, I completely relate to what you went through when you first started. I am so grateful for all the bloggers who made me feel comfortable, and gave me advice. I’m really looking forward to becoming part of this wonderful community, and paying it forward to other newbies.

  20. Oh I giggled & sniggered too at the iPhone photo comment as I’m only a very little notch up from that with my pics, such a long way to go…. but you truly give me hope with these awesome photos. So great to see who everyone is, it would have been fabulous to attend.

  21. Fabulous recap Marla! Your pictures are amazing! What’s not to love about San Fran and being with others that have the same passions. It was so great to meet you. Hopefully next time we will have more time to chat. And I really enjoyed the session that you, Amanda, Carrie, and Natayna gave. Fabulous!
    Have a wonderful weekend Marla!

    1. Megan: We missed you too! Feels like forever since our Baking with Betty trip.

Heavenly Housewife: Those piggy noses were so hilarious. One of the sponsors for the final party was the Pork Board, hence the get-ups! The food was awesome – pork & bacon everything.

Jeanette: Glad to hear you had such a positive experience at the conference. It is amazing how quickly you can grow and become successful when you open your heart & put your mind to it. Hope to meet you next year 🙂
