Gluten Free Fall Harvest Fruit Crumble

This is what dreams are made of I tell ya. Fall fruits cooked until they are bursting with flavor. Baked with a blend of almond meal, oat flour, sunflower seeds, tart dried cranberries.

What is it about a crumble topping that is so amazing and completely addictive? I don’t think I have ever met anyone who doesn’t have a favorite version of this recipe. No matter what the season you can bake up a fruit crumble, even when time is tight. Have one handy for aprรฉs ski, after the playground, family gatherings, brunch with girlfriends, etc…

With hardly any effort you can have one of the best ever desserts in minutes. Check it out…

Do you like my new Le Creuset stoneware baking dish? I went crazy for it when I saw that green color at Sur la Table. They call the color fennel. Makes it sound more fancy. I like fancy.

Use whatever fruit you have on hand. The toppings are versatile too. For this crumble I went gluten free with my favorite almond meal and some oats that I ground up in the blender. You don’t have to grind the oats though. I just thought it would be a fun texture with the ground almond meal.

Choose any fresh fruits of the season. I used apples, plums, figs and dried cranberries…

Add a dollop of Greek yogurt or top with freshly whipped cream. You can make layer parfaits too.

I was so excited when I found these tart dried cranberries at Mother’s Market. I often avoid this dried fruit because I don’t like all the added sugar. I finally found one that is fruit juice sweetened. They also have one at Trader Joe’s that is awesome!

I have been enjoying this daily for breakfast. When I am not feasting on Pumpkin Pie Tarts. Or Berry Goat Cheese Pizzas….

Do you know what the difference is between a crisp and a crumble? I am trying to figure that one out. From what I gather a crisp and crumble are quite similar. The crumble having a smoother, more breadcrumb like texture. Mine sounds a bit more crumbly. We love crisps too, check out my Cherry Cranberry Oat Crisp and my Sweet Potato Crisp recipes.

I have been hiking around Telluride taking photos of the glorious fall leaves. Can you believe those colors? I will have a post dedicated to that splendor soon to.

I love coming home from a chilly hike after lugging all my gear. The condo smells amazing when I bake up one of these! What is more comforting than the smell of apples and cinnamon?

  1. Do I really have to choose just one??? I’d probably have to pick apple. The mix of apple and cinnamon makes it perfect for a crisp fall day.

  2. I’m not sure what the difference is between a crisp and a crumble, but my dad makes an apple crisp that I really love. It’s basically tradition that he makes it each fall.

  3. I just made a fruit crisp last night that was extremely similar! Funny! Great minds think alike? I made one with plums, figs, and orange zest. It was very good, but I like the idea of adding an apple-will have to try next time.

  4. Looks delicious, Marla! I am finally gearing up for fall here in Pennsylvania, albeit begrudgingly. I don’t want to give up my sandals, tank tops, and capri pants!

I would say a nice mixed berry crumble is my favorite, topped with a dollop of greek yogurt (or vanilla fro yo, if I’m feeling naughty).

  5. Hi Marla!
Like you, I am pretty addicted to crumbles and crisps – have always loved them, even as a kid (but it’s gotta have COLD vanilla ice cream :-)!!

Wow, those colors in Telluride don’t look real, do they?? Hope you are having a great time!

  6. My favorite crumble is any one with syrupy sweet peaches or apples, tender but firm, and topped with lots of cinnamony buttery chunky crumbles!

  7. Hi Marla,

My mother used to make something similar to a crumble that she called it granolada. It involved cajeta and queso fresco with some peaches and pepitas too. It was great as breakfast and we just devoured it.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. I love this time of year for crumbles/crisps! Pear and apple are especially popular in our house right now, but we had an awesome peach version just this week. Adding dried cranberries or cherries adds just the right amount of sweetness!

  9. Oh my gosh, that fennel colored baking pan is SO pretty! Totally love it…gorgeous! ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite crisp is sour cherry…my mom makes an awesome one! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Apple crumple rules! A little vanilla ice cream and it is heaven!
All the photos are so beautiful! Makes my mouth water!!!!! Telluride is sooooo beautiful. That cool crisp weather really makes you crave warm yummy comfort food like crumble! Yum!

  11. Yum! I did an apple/cranberry crumble a few years ago that I still dream about. And I totally love the baking dish..I have the same one in Caribbean blue ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Fruit crisp is such a great way to start the day. Dessert for breakfast? Come on? What’s not to love? Especially if you’re in a cold, CO town and eating a warmed crisp for breakfast?

    xoxo,
    Brooke

  13. It’s hard to choose a crumble I love because I’ve never eaten one I don’t like! Probably peach or blackberry would be at the top of my list ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I love apple crisps. My friend made one with just a few ingredients and I was hooked. I stole the recipe and just made it after our trip to the apple orchard.

  15. The babysitter we had growing up made the BEST apple crumble in the world. My mom and dad went on dates once a week so we got apple crumble every single weekend. Christine (the babysitter) would come over with all the ingredients and we’d spend the night baking. You know, come to think of it, that’s where I learned to love baking. I still have the recipe, but haven’t tried making it since I went gluten-free. I should get on that!

    1. Leanne, those are some special memories and how thoughtful and fun was your baby sitter! Bet you had a blast with her. Your mom must have been pleased that she kept you busy doing such productive things. Neat how you learned your love & passion for baking ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. okay this would be even better with a shot of Rรฉmy Martin cognac tossed in with the fruit – the alcohol would burn off during baking leaving a new depth of flavor to the crumble – that’s my fav way to make fruit crumble – or peach pie ! #Just Saying!!!

    1. Hey Lucy….now that is a great idea. i do enjoy different kinds of spirits in cooked foods. You are so right…adds a great dimension of flavor and elegance. By the way, saw on Instagram that you were drinking some Rรฉmy Martin earlier today. Like 11am earlier. Glad to see you were having such a cheerful morning!

    1. Sarah, I bet the Cherry color is stunning. I must get my hands on some of those. Would look so pretty in photos. Your brown butter plum crumble sounds wonderful. Is the recipe on your blog?

  17. I have also been wondering about the difference between crisp and crumble…I just kind of guessed that crisp would be harder…or crispier, and a crumble would…fall apart. Logic has never been my strength.

Your crumble sounds deliciousโ€”I especially love the fruit combination for the filling!

PS: I love the colour of your baking dish!

    1. Beth, I am loving that color too. When I stumbled upon it at Sur la Table I got all giddy. It came in a package of two sizes too which makes this even better! There is a smaller one too.
I like your logic on the crisp-crumble controversy. I would say you have great logic!

  18. i havent tried too many crumbles, just an apple one and it was delicious but i would love to try one with more fall flavors incorporated into it! plus it would be nice to try a pumpkin pecan crumble!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Oh, that looks SO good! My favorite crumble is the apple pie my MIL makes that has a crumble topping. It is seriously awesome. Not too sweet!

  20. My favorite crumble is blueberry. But this time of year all I can dream of is my family recipe of apple crisp!! Yum!!!

  21. I personally love a good apple crisp, but this looks fantastic too. I want to try it. And I love, love, love your new dish, the color is fab! Enjoy Colorado… I was just in Aspen for a few days and it was magical. xo

  22. I dont have a favorite recipe but I love the idea of the almond meal in the topping. And your pictures are just beautiful as always! I’m so glad you got a visit from the Fairy Hobmother. Not hard at all to spend $50 bucks at Amazon.

  23. What gorgeous scenery, Marla! And yes, I love your new Le Creuset baking dish – such a pretty color. As for my favorite fruit crumble – well, it’s hard to choose, but I’d have to say peaches with a gingersnap crumble.

  24. I love my mother-in-law’s cherry and apple crumble. I tried my own version using Evan’s cherries and tart apples and was in crumble heaven!!!

Lovely post and gorgeous pictures as usual, Marla ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Michelle, seriously I would love to get my hands on all kinds of shapes & sizes of these beauties. the cobalt blue is stunning! Love the apple – cherry combo ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. I have to say that apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting on top is my all-time favorite. Or maybe it’s blueberry? No, definitely apple.
Yes, Marla, that green baking dish is beautiful. I’m so afraid to go into Sur la Table, don’t know if I’d be able to control myself!
Almond meal is my new favorite thing! I’ve been using it the past few weeks and it has added such great flavor and texture to everything I’ve made. LOVE it!

    1. Lynne, isn’t it amazing how you can’t stop using that almond flour once you open a bag? I use it everywhere I would ordinarily use breadcrumbs & of course to replace/add to grain based flours. It is tough to decide on a favorite fruit crumble. There are so many! Sur la Table is soooo tricky to go into ๐Ÿ˜‰ That and Lululemon for me.

  26. We love our fruit crumbles or crisps around our house, usually apple is the favorite. Your pictures are gorgeous – wish I could visit Telluride and have a taste of your lovely crumble.

  27. Peach is my favorite though I do love apple in the fall. I have fond weekend memories of driving through rural Indiana/Michigan countryside purchasing sweet, just picked peaches from roadside stands while on my way to my in-law’s lake cottage. Most of the peaches were paid for on the honor system (leaving money in a designated spot). Interesting story – one of those juicy peaches caused my husband’s wedding ring to slip off his finger and into the lake of the dock he was sitting on. I came back from a shopping trip only find my husband and father-in-law waist deep in water feeling for the ring. They eventually did find it, so happy ending for all.

  28. mmmm i love crumble in most forms. it just screams fall and winter to me. peach, cherry, apple…they are all so good. there is just something very special about crumble or cobbler…i think it goes back to my Mima, she always whipped up a crumble when we would visit. I just had Mima here for a few weeks in my home and we put together a peach and cherry crumble that took me right back to my childhood, standing on a chair in her kitchen baking crumbles and cobblers. ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Peach! Nothing beats peach crisp- or crumble. And now that I have a sugar free recipe, I will make it more often! I love your sugar free baked goods. I don’t even add the stevia- just leave it naturally sweetened by fruit, and its enough for me. Thanks for doing all the test-work to make these sugar free recipes work!

  30. Since I live in western North Carolina nothing tastes as good as a wonderful, fresh from the trees, apple crisp. Yum.

  31. I usually make a crumble in a jar using a mason jar. You can get any type of fruit and like the above, combine fruit with some sweetener and make a standard crumble. However, I am a big protien person. I always need something high in protein for every meal. So my little spin is that I put a layer of ricotta cheese before the crumble, sometimes sweetend if I am not using that sweet of fruit (ie. cranberries) and usually mixed with some spice (ie. cinnamon, cardamom etc…) It melts down into the fruit and the mason jar is great for an on-the-go breakfast!

    1. Margy…I do the same thing!! Love this. Ricotta is so high in protein & I love it’s neutral/creamy flavor. I have not melted it in the mason jars though. Will do!

  32. Your photos look gorgeous! I want to have a slice of this crumble now with a cup of coffee! My favorite kind of crumble is the blueberry crumble.

  33. Blueberry Crumble… there isn’t a way that blueberries don’t taste good. But, the combination of oats, nuts, and natural sweetness makes my family happy. Yum! We need to try this out for breakfast though in my hopes to rid our kids of boxed cereal.

  34. Marla, once again you blow me away with your beautiful photography and of course, your scrumptious-looking recipe. Oh, and the views in CO. You lucky duck. My favorite crumble right now is an apple blueberry crumble with a walnut/oatmeal topping. Light on the added sugar and no butter. Let the natural flavors of the fruit bring on the sweetness. PS: LOVE the fennel baking dish. I may just have to buy one (if I win the gift card)!

  35. I follow you on Instagram and Facebook. Oh, and while you’re enjoying yourself in CO (or are you now in GA?), I’m here in Boston cleaning out my linen closet. I kid you not! It’s been a fun day (NOT) ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. I came across your blog for the first time today, and I loved your ideas (especially the lunch box ideas) so much that I subscribed to your RSS feed on google reader! Double bonus that it gives me another chance to win this giveaway!

  37. Blackberry crumble! Living in Washington State there are blackberry bushes running rampant along all the trails I walk and run on! I always bring something with me to gather them when I’m walking so I can come home and make dessert!!

  38. I love all desserts with fruit. I have had a great peach raspberry crumble, blackberry crumble, apple crumble, and apricot crumble.

  39. I think my favorite kind of crumble would have to be the apple crumble. Those are just toooo delicious!
    Also, great recipe! ๐Ÿ™‚

  40. First I have to say, I love that gorgeous baking dish! That is such a pretty shade of green that I go crazy for. And of course the crumble that it holds looks pretty fantastic too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love the first snowfall pics, Marla! It really is magical, isn’t it?

  41. Looks yummy! I usually stick with a simple apple crisp…but I might have to fancy it up with this combo!

  42. Mmm, I love apple crisp with cranberries! The sweetness plus that little bit of tart from the cranberries is soooo good!

  43. I just made this, but I used the fruit I had on hand, which was apples and frozen cherries! I added maple syrup as my sweetener. I am letting it cool, but I am having this for lunch with my greek yogurt! Thank you so much! If it’s ok, I am gong to post this recipe on my blog and give you the credit and have your link! I love crisps, and this one is healthy and gluten free! Thanks Marla!!!

    1. Jennifer, I am so glad you like my crumble recipe. Apples and cherries sound wonderful. You can post with all of the appropriate links back ๐Ÿ™‚ xo

  44. Yum! In the oven as I write a thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ Used GF oats and no stevia or sweetner…did add coconut chunks though.

  45. Hi! I just came across your delicious crumble recipe and made it this weekend. I adapted the fruit slightly and added raspberries and blueberries. It was perfect, thank you so much for sharing it! Katy x
