This time of year I crave lots of fresh flavors including mint…especially in my cocktails! Did you know that the Kentucky Derby is next weekend? The Mint Julep is a classic Southern cocktail that is always enjoyed at this historic racing event. Cheers! The Kentucky Derby has been held at the Churchill Downs since 1938. The Mint Julep has been the signature drink for the event from the very start. At the race they are served in collectable glasses. Like the ones in this picture… (what a score these were!)
Kentucky Derby Cocktail: Bourbon & Cider Delight
Last year I posted that cocktail (you must try it!) which is a blend of my mountain style & Kentucky flair. I love this julep in my leopard glasses & the horse one.
Traditionally the Mint Julep was made with bourbon & these days it can be that or Kentucky whiskey.
There is plenty of finely chopped ice, mint simple syrup & the alcohol added to the glass. It is topped again with more crushed ice. A beautiful fresh mint sprig should crown the glass.
Whether you will be attending the races or watching from your home…be sure to include this signature cocktail at your parties! Why not make one for happy hour today?!
To wrap things up, here’s a little vid!
