We had a rainy, cool weekend here in the OC and I thought it was time to post a warm and comforting Rustic Roasted Tomato Soup. This is a classic soup that should be in everyone’s recipe box. It is very simple to prepare and wonderful all year round.
Enjoyed with a side salad and a oozy grilled cheese sandwich and all is right in the world.
Aren’t those vine tomatoes spectacular? How about the mini Bocconcini mozzarella balls? Those are super fun floating around in your bowl of soup. Don’t forget a splash of hot sauce too.
Today is the group C Secret Recipe Club reveal. I was secretly handed the blog Made Famous By. This fun blog is written by a cute mom of three named Heather.
This is how she describes her blog:
“I am a self proclaimed recipe hoarder and these are some of the recipes that my friends and I are famous for. When ever I come across something that is absolutly to die for, I MUST have the recipe. With this blog I hope to celebrate the every day cook. I truly believe that ordinary people can make EXTRAORDINARY recipes!!”
I believe the same thing. You do not need to be trained in expensive culinary schools to cook up amazing food. You simply need to be motivated, experimental and willing. You also need to buy the freshest of ingredients…
On Made Famous By I found this recipe for Ina Garten’s Cream of Fresh Tomato Soup. As we all know Ina is a genius in the kitchen. She embraces whole food ingredients and has a vibrant passion for food.
I have a few of Ina’s Barefoot Contessa cookbooks. I use Ina’s recipes as a springboard for ideas and make them my own. This is the case for tomato soup. The recipe is bit too heavy for my tastes. Ina and Heather use 3/4 cups of heavy cream. I prefer to not use as much cream in my recipes.
We all have different tastes. That’s cool.
Fresh herbs always make a big difference. Use them when you can…
Soup, salad and grilled cheese are classic pairings. For the ultimate comfort food meal I love this soup with a baby spinach salad with a splash of Ranch dressing. Make your own or try one of our favorites by Marzetti Simple Dressed. We love their Ranch, Greek Feta or Champagne dressings with this rustic soup & salad combo.
What is your favorite soup recipe?

At this time of year, there is so much rich and heavy food around that it’s so nice to have something a bit lighter too. I love the idea of the little mozzarella pearls floating in the soup too, just perfect!
That soup must be very flavorful and so comforting! Beautiful.
Cheers,
Rosa
Oh, my my. You’ve done it again, Marla. Beautiful photos, fresh ingredients, scrumptious recipe. This is SO my kinda soup. Definitely making this one.
I love homemade tomato soup the mozzarella is a great idea! Thanks for sharing 😉
Yum. That looks beautiful. Whenever I would get sick in the winter, my mom would always feed me tomato soup and crackers. It was always so comforting! This looks like a great version.
Tomato Basil Soup goes perfectly with grilled cheese! I love the soup you made and the pictures are beautiful!
What a wonderful blog you got for SRC. Tomato soup is always comforting. Thanks for sharing.
Can’t beat homemade tomato soup and I LOVE the addition of fresh mozz!
Those tomatoes are so pretty! What a great set you found to photograph for this yummy soup 🙂

Hi Julia! Thanks so much 🙂
Aren’t those little mozzarella balls like crazy cute? I was so *happy* when I saw them.
Ina is a great Springboard!! xxoo
YESSSS, I need this. NEED NEED NEED.

Marla~
I want to dive in to that photo.
Tomatoes are my favorite.
How cute are those mozzarella balls~
only you would think of that!
Love this recipe.
I agree. I can’t deal with all the cream Ina uses.
But love her to pieces!
I’m making her granola bars to take to yoga on Thanksgiving morning.
What should I package them in for everyone to grab as they leave?
Any cute suggestions would make me SMILE~
xoxoxo
Teresa….I adore bakery twine. Wrapping your perfect granola bars in some parchment & that string could be fun. I have the sampler colors from The Twinery Have you ever visited that site? Knowing you and your GREAT taste I am certain you have…
How SWEET of you to bring your yoga pals some sweet n’ healthy snacks!

I was thinking about you when I was coordinating this tomato soup post. I know you and Greg could appreciate this soup with those grilled cheese sandwiches you were cooking up yesterday!
Marla~
The twine is the perfect thing. I have it on my list of things to find today. I went and found the Telluride Bars that you posted. I love the way those are wrapped.
Everything you do is cute.
I am grateful for you and the time that you take to answer questions.
You see the love and perfection in everything and everybody.
I am grateful to have you in my heart and in my life.
Thanks for sharing YOU Marla.
I adore you.
xo
Teresa…back at you my friend. You always make me happy too. Your energy is catching, beautiful, warm and invigorating!! If ever I am having a bad moment I can look at one of your comments here to make me smile. Those Telluride Trail Bars are super yummy. I need to make another batch over here soon. Better yet, I need to just get back out to Telluride & take you with me 🙂
Thanks for sharing this recipe Marla! Just this week I’ve been having a craving for tomato soup with grilled cheese! But definitely no canned tomato soup. Homemade is the best. It looks so good. Fresh plump tomatoes…. Yum 🙂
Hope you have a wonderful monday!
Thanks Heather! Nothing from a can could be nearly as good as homemade. This soup takes a few minutes longer than popping open a can, but the effort is so worth it. Make a double batch so you have lots and grab and go leftover portions. This soup would freeze really well too!
I love tomato soup. This looks just fantastic! Come visit us. We have a terrific pumpkin macaroni and cheese.
Happy Thanksgiving.
The soup look great. Nordstrom makes a tomato basil soup that when I was pregnant, I swear, I’d go to the mall to the Nordstrom Cafe just to have that soup. I never knew it existed and someone turned me onto it. Your version looks wonderful.
And I love the mini Bocconcini mozzarella balls. Too cute!
PERFECT soup, Marly! I love tomato and basil…classic combination!
Oh YUM! Clearly we were both in a tomato state of mind this month
I just love tomato soup, it’s one of my favorite next to Chicken Noodle. Adding the mozzarella balls is perfect! It’s like Caprese Soup!
Jennifer, it is like a Caprese soup. This would be great for summer parties too. No need to save it for the fall/winter months. When I think Caprese I think warm weather…
Oh Marla, this sounds incredible! I love the addition of the Bocconcini Mozzarella!
Yummy! That looks so delicious. Yesterday was the perfect day for soup. Roasting any veggie gives it the best flavor ever! I want to make this for lunch on thanksgiving day. It is supposed to rain and be cold. A little comfort food goes a long way! Your photos are so amazing! Love it!
looks fabulous! Happy holiday to you and your family!
This soup with a grilled cheese sandwich?! Yes please! I can’t wait to try this one out! 🙂
Great pics and I love this soup recipe (and the garnishes)!
I once made vegan “creamy” tomato soup (creamy from blended soaked cashews) and was a little less than impressed…but I do think it was because of my impatience and excitement in combining the ingredients (it was my first time making soup from scratch). The soup turned out a little grainy (from not blending long enough), but it had potential!
I imagine that in roasting the tomatoes (like you did here), the recipe is 10X better.
I’m going to bookmark this baby and make it on a snowy day…which is not too far off round these parts 🙂
Thank you for sharing!
Hi Alyssa! I could see how the cashews could make a really nice and creamy soup soup. You are right though, they would need to be ground well and puréed seamlessly with the tomatoes. Roasting your tomatoes first gives them a great big jumpstart in flavor. They actually do become more creamy tasting….mixed with the olive oil. All of the flavors have a nice amount of time to marry while roasting. Keep in mind this soup is even better the day after you make it!
Tomato soup is my favorite and I created a good one for my cookbook already. Love the idea of adding the little mozzarella balls. Perfect!! Beautiful photos!
I’m bookmarking this one! I love roasted tomatoes and it is indeed the season for soup and grilled sandwiches. If I needed to add flour to thicken the soup, would I do that at the very end, before removing from heat and pureeing? And could I use regular all-purpose flour? (I don’t have coconut flour).
those tomatoes are so beautiful, they look unreal!
this is my favorite soup, a tomato basil, and to pair it with a grilled cheese? mmm… we have a VERY rainy day here today, I may have to make this tonight! and YES, we always add hot sauce!
oh, and I voted. again! you are *SO* close.
Kris, hot sauce is essential isn’t it? We have like every brand & strength in the fridge. Always 🙂
Thanks for your ongoing votes at the Alexia contest. I need as many as I can get!!
Wonderfull pictures! And I love the colours, and that you roasted the tomatos. Will have to give this a try!
Thank you so much for visiting me, & fot the lovely comments, oh my my you are fabulous photographer, those clicks are stunning, such beautiful colours, you chose a fantastic recipe perfect for winter. I do make tomato soup but adding mozarella seems to be a good idea , my kids would love this…
Jayarsi, thanks so much! Those tomatoes were super fun to shoot. The mozzarella does make the soup a bit more fun 🙂
Marla, your soup looks amazing! Love the little mozz balls…so yummy…and your photos are outstanding!!! Have a fabulous Thanksgiving, my friend~
Wow … that sounds absolutely delicious! And the photos? Beautiful! Great post!
Such a wonderful recipe! I love it!!
This soup looks fantastic … and your photos are absolutely gorgeous. 🙂
Roasted tomatoes are always a winner for me, and oh my gosh this soup looks amazing! My Italian family would be all about the bocconcini and hot sauce, too – perfect!!!
Wow your soup looks soooo good and comforting. I love the cheese on top! And as always, your photos are gorgeous. 🙂

Love that last picture with the sun streaming in so gently… you have such an amazing eye Marla! This soup sounds absolutely amazing!!
Hope a GREAT time this weekend!!
I’m about ready to get into soup mode. This one looks like a winner!
Love the idea of floating the boccocini balls in the soup!!! Have to try that the next time I make a roasted tomato soup!
I need to make this soon, especially with those lil mozzarella balls! I just love roasted tomato soup! Thanks Marla.
I could do with a large bowl right now – please send over asap – don’t worry about the grilled cheese – got that covered!
Grilled cheese and tomato soup is probably one of my favorite meals! This soup sounds like a must-try!
I love roasted tomato soup (making some this weekend), but I think my favorites are actually clear broth soups like pho or the elaborate pumpkin soup I made last year.
it looks so good! I love the small mozzarella balls it gives the soup a really nice touch
Hi,
I know this was posted a while ago, however, I just pinned from Pinterest, but I have a question that didn’t seem to be answered ……unless I missed it. My question is, if you do need to thicken it, at what point would you thicken it, and do you just add the coconut flour directly or does it need to be mixed with water? Why coconut flour? Any other suggestions for thickener? Love your site, pictures, and recipes!
Thanks!
i cooked this soup today and it was vey delicious. thank you for the recipe.
