Cherry Earl Grey Applesauce

Who in the world would have thought that my favorite apple the Pink Lady had a super cool website? I am very impressed with their bright & cheery graphics, makes me love ’em more. Pink Lady apples are the perfect combo of sweet & tart. They don’t turn brown easily & they have a delightful crispy-crunch when you bite into them. Second up I like Granny Smith & Honeycrisp. No matter what your favorite apple you can make a great fresh homemade applesauce.

As summer draws to a close I thought it would be nice to combine cherries, which are a traditional summer fruit & crisp apples that kick off the fall season. Homemade applesauce beats the flavor of  jarred ones & is simple to prepare. It is great for baby food, kids lunchboxes, snacks & dessert. You might want to go without the tea if this is for your baby…..or simply use decaf. I love exposing my kids to all kinds of unique flavor combinations.

If you are having guests over or you are trying to sell you house throw a pot of homemade applesauce on the stove and your house will smell like a giant apple pie. It is a bit misleading as no buttery crust accompanies a pot of simmering applesauce, but I am sure you can make that happen if you desire.

This huge bowl of apples was on the table at the lodge we stay at in Telluride. Each time my kids passed it they would grab a big juicy apple to munch on. I used these and some Pink Lady’s that I got at the farmer’s market in town. Combine with fresh cherries (or frozen if cherries are out of season) and you have a very tasty homemade applesauce.

I added Earl Grey for a slight flavor twist, you can go with or without this. You could add any tea you desire. The tea can replace any other spices you might use. Layering this applesauce with thick greek yogurt makes this into a creamy & very pretty dessert or mini meal.

  1. Homemade applesauce is seriously the best. It can even turn not the tastiest of apples into a delicious snack. At my parents house, they have this really old apple tree that produces all of these small, usually defected apples. But I’d collect a ton and make applesauce. Warm applesauce is absolutely the best.

I love the color that the cherries give this recipe!

Favorite kind of tea: I’d have to go with Roastarama

  2. I’m a fan of Mighty Leaf on FB.

Oh, I love homemade applesauce. Nothing bought in the store comes close. This recipe looks amazing. Can’t wait to try it!

  3. Fess up…you like Pink Lady apples because they’re kind of pink and have the word ‘pink’ in their name. 🙂 I just can’t put any other apple above the Honeycrisp – yum yum

    1. Pamela: How did you know! Of course they are my favorite because they have the word “pink” in their name 🙂

Grace: That is such a sweet story about the apple tree you grew up with.

  4. Love a mint tea- especially if we have a little upset tummy at our house… also, the Good Earth Original is always welcome- I am always trying to figure out what makes it taste sweet… even if you know, please don’t tell me… it would be like finding out Santa wasn’t real!

  5. I would have never thought to add tea but I have a nice rose tea that I might just have to try. Love the idea and the presentation is beautiful!
    I love a good honeycrisp!

  6. I love Mighty Tea! Citrus Herb is my favorite tea. Favorite applesauce is plain applesauce. Thanks, Maureen (jnomaxx at hotmail dot com)

  7. My favorite teas are Darjeeling and Earl Grey, although I love trying different blends. I also like simple unsweetened applesauces so the apple flavor shines through, and I also think apple butter is pretty good too!

  8. Tropical Green Tea is my favorite (all-time) but I do have a new favorite, Tropical White Tea. Applesauce: I like Cinnamon Applesauce. Anything with lots of spice.

  9. What a unique flavor combination you created! Chai tea is definately my favorite along with homemade apple sauce. I actually just made a batch with some apples a gal at my work brought in. They were sweet and tart, kind of like a pink lady. I added in tons of cinnamon and a dab of honey and it was just perfect!

  10. Your recipes are always so creative, Marla! I wish we lived closer so we could have a girls’ cooking day and make all kinds of creative things together! The Earl Grey is brilliant in applesauce. I like to add blueberries to my applesauce…so good! My favorite tea is green, sweetened with local honey and stirred with a cinnamon stick. Thanks for hosting another great giveaway!

  11. I am most certainly a pink lady LOVER as well but honeycrisps will always be my favorite! I’m also an apple sauce fiend. My favorite tea right now is Celestial Seasoning’s bengali spice. I bet the cinnamon cardamom flavors would go great in applesauce! Thanks for this FAB idea!

  12. I am such a fan of your blog — this is such a beautiful, creative post (and recipe)! I love homemade applesauce…especially with a little cinnamon. I’d love to try this with rooibos tea, since that’s my favorite. And I love the idea of using this for a parfait! Thanks for sharing!

    1. You guys really know how to make a gal smile. I love reading that so many of you make your own applesauce from scratch. For those of you that do not….we will convert you.

  13. Marla…those photos bring out the child in me ;o)) Too adorable.

My favourite apples are two you’ve mentioned: Pinky and Honey…plus my new found friend called the ‘red free’…who’s a little difficult to find unfortunately.

    Beautiful parfaits ;o)
    Flavourful wishes, Claudia

    1. Claudia: I have never heard of “Red Free” apples. You now have me very curious to seek them out. I wonder if they are at all similar to our other two favorites?

Christina: I am so happy you had great success with this applesauce. The tea infusion does add a special something.

  14. I just made this with Granny Smith and Pink lady apples. I didn’t have plain Earl Grey so used a lavender one. No sweetener. It’s absolutely delicious! I will be making this again and experimenting with different teas. Thanks for posting this! Next on my list is your pumpkin vanilla applesauce…

  15. I am not one who cares for earl grey tea in things – but it is in everything these days, and everyone else loves it. I love the photo of the apples and cherries in the frying pan. GORGEOUS.
    🙂
