Quinoa with Blood Orange and Basil

[donotprint]

quinoa with tumeric, blood orange, green onion and spices

Blood oranges are showing up all over the markets and the web these days. Not only are they beautiful with their ruby red color, but they are a tasty addition to sweets and savories. This is a great dish for Meatless Monday’s. Quinoa is a great high protein whole grain that is also gluten free. The citrus and grain combo makes for a great side or full meal when served with veggies.

Bloggers Unite! Braving the New Frontier

For some reason Phil Collins came into my world the other day.  The song “Easy Lover” was on the radio.  Not only did I listen, but I turned up the volume really loud and sang at the top of my lungs.  No, the kids were not in my car.  They can handle the country music, but this my friends was something that could be traumatizing for them later in life.

Easy Lover

I am easy.  I admit it.  Swoon me with my favorite products, books & travel opportunities.  Chances are I will give you a piece of me & some chatter on my blog.  Thankfully I am at a stage in my life where I am very comfortable in my own skin.  I can look in the mirror and say “I like me.”  A very different take from my teen years, or my 20’s.  That said, watch out….I am not hungry to promote and chat up anything that comes my way.  In order to review your product, book, gadget it needs to be something I believe in.  I might be an easy lover, but a discerning easy lover.

Breakfast

Fruit and Egg Skillet Oatmeal

[donotprint]

We love a great bowl of steamy oatmeal over here. There are countless ways you can add flavor and more texture to a bowl of oats. In this recipe I include lots of lean protein, healthy fats and flavor to get you going and to keep you going until your next meal. Apples and oats are a match made in heaven and I enjoy them whenever possible.

Egg Battered Grilled Cheese

[donotprint]

Lately I have had a fierce addiction to blaring country music in my car. Have never been much a fan of it until now. Perhaps it was the Egg Farm tour I just got back from. Maybe my ties to Telluride are making themselves more pronounced. That high altitude haven is a mix of  bling meets hippie, coffee drinking beatnik, athlete and cowboy. To partner with my love of all things Americana these days I have had big cravings for grilled cheese sandwiches.

Marla Gets Cracking! Egg Farm Tour {& Giveaway}

My folks are very supportive.  They generally hop on board my whimsical ideas and offer up token parental guidance.  They are fans of my blog ’cause I’m their kid.  My dad likes the “pictures” and my mom thinks my recipes are “interesting.”

Growing up we would spend each summer together as a family on my aunt and uncles dairy farm in the UK.  My dad would beam with joy as we stepped off the plane after  a frustrating and exhausting relaxing 7 hours squashed  on an airplane with his two children.

Fire Roasted Tomato Soup with Chickpeas

[donotprint]

When I have soup, it’s gotta be from scratch.  For me soup from a can is too one dimensional in flavor (salty) and the veggies are mushy.  It is so simple to throw a soup together. A quick and steamy bowl is a great way to pack in a few servings of veggies. Soup satisfies by filling your belly with nourishing whole foods. We love chickpeas in everything these days, tossing a handful in a veggie soup makes it the perfect meal.

Jamie Oliver: The 2010 TED award

It is said the average time people spend reading and listening to blog posts and vlogs is about 80 seconds.  This video is a whopping 21 minutes.  You might not hang for that long, but you will learn loads if you do.

I received a comment the other day in regards to my Skinny Citrus Fizz (Soda) post:

“Thanks for the lecture. How about a post without all the reprimanding?”

At first the comment made me sad, then I got frustrated.  The words sat in the “pending” folder for a few days.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post a negative vibe. Thankfully I got over myself and decided to hit “publish.”  Blogs are an open forum of communication right?  Someone cared enough to visit my blog, read my post and share their thoughts.  They were honest.

Baked Sweets and Treats

Skinny Chocolate Drop Cookies

I am not sure what inspired me to come up with this cookie recipe. Perhaps it is my love for chocolate. I also have a thing for Ezekiel bread. Combining the two was a small experiment in health, flavor and a very quick, simple to prepare cookie. The results are a cakey, rich fabulous treat. Perfect for any time of day.

Citrus

Skinny Citrus Fizz (Soda)

[donotprint]

For those of you who are ready for Spring but the snow is still falling, here is your chance to add some sunny citrus to your world.  The markets are flooded with all kinds of oranges, lemons and limes right now.  If you have a stuffy nose the extra vitamin C is helpful.  Some of you might be trying to wean yourselves off of traditional, mass produced, industrial sodas.  I know some of my Ten in ’10 pals are trying to clean up  and shed the soda thing.

The thoughts of sunny citrus were provoked from a not so sunny realization:

I was stopped in my tracks by a blog post I read the other day at 5 Second Rule simply titled Soda. I really dig Cheryl’s blog.  Her posts are well thought out, beautifully photographed and extremely informative.  Being that I don’t watch TV or really listen to mass produced media, folks like Cheryl have become a great source of alerting me to current events.  At least events regarding food!  My daily news updates come in the form of reading my buddies blogs.  Way more interesting!!

Reading her Soda post I became aware of the tax they are trying to impose on this sugar & chemical ridden, artificial beverage.  From Cheryl’s post I clicked over to Mark Bittman’s article A Sin we Sip Instead of Smoke?” Here he states:

“……Michelle Obama. And a growing number of public health advocates are pushing for even more aggressive actions, urging that soda be treated like tobacco: with taxes, warning labels and a massive public health marketing campaign, all to discourage consumption.”

Thats right folks.  Perhaps one day we can decrease obesity in our children and help to prevent all the diabetes going on out there.  No one is saying soda will go away.  Can we just work together and start making some “right” choices?  Let’s lead by example….for our children!
