Project Sunlight

I’ve got the Unilever Project Sunlight initiative to share with you today. What is it? An important initiative worth knowing way more about… Kids who LOVE to cook! MarlaMeridith.com The Unilever Project Sunlight initiative launched last year with the goal of motivating millions of people to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. This is something that is near & dear to my heart and something to share with my kids. NO CHILD SHOULD FACE HUNGER. SHARE A MEAL BECAUSE TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Kids | MarlaMeridith.com So what exactly is Project Sunlight? Great question! I’ve got your answer right here…The dialogue is simple & easy to share with kids of all ages. It really opened my kids eyes to how very lucky they are & how much they want to help others. The program aims to make sustainable living desirable and achievable by inspiring people to look at the possibilities of a world where everyone lives well and within the natural limits of the planet. In Project Sunlight’s latest initiative #ShareAMeal, Unilever is asking people to help turn the table on childhood hunger by taking easy actions like.
  • Help a family in your neighborhood
  • Partner with local organizations
  • Coordinate with your local food bank
All of these are so simple for you & the kids to get involved in! The Unilever initiative dovetailed perfectly with a SheKnows Hatch initiative to help kids become more aware of the problem of hunger in America.  The overall mission of Hatch is to empower kids to use media and technology to express themselves in productive and positive ways. Emphasizing media literacy and digital storytelling, Hatch enables kids to create content that is responsible and represents their unique perspectives. Our Hunger Project, documented in the video below, exposed our “hatchlings” to hunger in tangible, meaningful ways by literally asking them to put the food on the table with an extremely small budget. Kids | MarlaMeridith.com My kids have really enjoyed learning about this essential program. I hope yours will too!  They are obsessed with being on their iPads…so this is the perfect way for them to interact with a positive mission. Our “hatchlings” are the first step to fighting the hunger battle. About SheKnows’ Hatch, the Hatch Hunger Project and Unilever Project Sunlight:
SheKnows’ Hatch teamed with Unilever Project Sunlight to help families build awareness and take action around child hunger in America. The facts are startling: 16 million kids living in the United States don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That equates to one in every five children – enough to fill 18,000 school buses and 223 football stadiums. On average, those who live in food-insecure households have only $36.50 to spend on groceries every week. That means that 80 percent of children may not understand the everyday struggle their peers – many of whom could be their own friends or neighbors – confront when there’s not enough food on the table. The Hatch Hunger and Project Sunlight video and workshop aims to create empathy by showing kids what it means to shop for healthy, filling meals for an entire week on a thrifty budget. It teaches important math and teamwork skills. Finally, it is about action, empowering kids to have a positive impact on their community to Share A Meal with a family in need and donating food and canned goods to local food banks.
